- Mercedes-Benz Vans is electricating North America: For the first time, American customers can make their fleet more sustainable using a locally emission-free, battery-electric vans sporting the Mercedes star.
- The cargo van version of the brand-new eSprinter with the most performance will be released in the U.S. and Canada in the second half of 2023, while the market launch in Europe will follow toward the end of 2023.
- Production network expanded: The all-new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter will be manufactured in Charleston (South Carolina/USA) and Ludwigsfelde, Germany in the future in addition to the Mercedes-Benz plant in Dusseldorf.
Mercedes-Benz Vans is continuously electrifying its entire models within the model series. The all-new eSprinter impresses with efficiency, range and capacity to load and is truly global model: Made throughout North America and Europe, it will be a strong proof of its claim to “Lead in Electric Drive” with over 60 markets in the near future.
The brand new eSprinter is equipped with numerous technological innovations and is based on an entirely new concept consisting of three modules. They allow the most freedom in the design and design of different superstructures and conversions previously only available on the traditional Sprinter.
The front panel, a uniformly-designed front section comprises all high-voltage parts and is able to be used with all vehicle variations regardless of wheelbase or battery size. The module for the high-voltage battery integrated is situated in the underbody to conserve space. The battery location in between the axles in conjunction with the sturdy battery housing creates an extremely low center of gravity that has a positive effect on handling and improves driving safety. The third element of modularity is the rear module, which has the rear axle that is electrically driven. Based on the common parts approach it is utilized in all variations of the brand new eSprinter. The small and powerful electric motor is included in the rear module.
Mercedes-Benz has invested around 350 million euros in its brand-new eSprinter. About 50 million euros will be invested in each of the three factories in Charleston, Dusseldorf and Ludwigsfelde to adapt their production. The modular design of the all-new eSprinter allows maximum synergies in production and consequently, economies of scale.
Mathias Geisen, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, is convinced: “The new Mercedes-Benz eSprinter consistently follows our strategy – to be the leader in electric mobility with the most desirable vans while achieving profitable growth worldwide.”
The brand-new eSprinter is flexible and efficient
The launch of the brand-new eSprinter is scheduled to begin in the U.S. and Canada in the second half of 2023. It will be a long cargo van with a roof that is high. It comes with the most powerful battery available with a usable capacity of 113 kilowatt hours. The capacity of the battery is 488 cubic feet and the permissible gross vehicle weight is 4.25 tons.
The electric range built on an experiment using the WLTP cycle, will be up to 400123 km (~248.5 miles). The range that is simulated based on the WLTP city cycle will be up to 500123 kilometers (~311 miles). These ranges make the vehicle suitable for longer journeys.
“With the new eSprinter, we are taking the electric large van segment to a new level. The triad of efficiency, range and load capacity with simultaneous TCO optimization makes the new eSprinter the most versatile Mercedes-Benz eVan ever,” says Mathias Geisen.
HighlightsYou aren’t able to notice it on the outside of the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, the brand new model however, if you examine the technology that is integrated into the vehicle, as well as the cloud-based services in the Mercedes me connect4 digital ecosystem, it becomes clear that the focus is always on the added benefit to customers.
The electric powertrain (eATS)
The key components of the eATS in the all-new eSprinter are two brand new innovations: the efficient motor and the innovative rear axle with electric power Both of them are being made available for the first time on a battery-powered electric van from Mercedes-Benz.
The permanent magnet synchronous motor that weighs just 286 lb., is characterized by its high efficiency and optimized thermal management. It is offered in two levels of power, with 150 or 100 kilowatts of peak output, and delivers a torque of up to 400 newton meters (~295 ft.lb. ).
High-voltage battery , charging and
When it launches, North American customers will be offered the largest battery for the new Mercedes- Benz eSprinter with an usable capacity of 113 kilowatts. Lithium/ironphosphate (LFP) cell chemistry allows the battery variants to be free of nickel and cobalt and active thermal management will ensure the highest efficiency.
Similar to all Mercedes-Benz eVans, the all-new eSprinter can be charged using both the alternating current (AC) and direct current (DC). The on-board charger converts the current in the car when charged with AC, for instance at a Wallbox that can output up to 9.6 kilowatts. The new eSprinter is able to be charged with as much as 1155 kilowatts at fast-charging stations.
For customers fast charging means: charging from 10 to 80 percent of capacity6 takes about 42 minutes for the 113 kWh battery.
Digitization and infotainment with MBUX
The brand-new eSprinter is also impressive in terms of digitization and infotainment. It is equipped with the innovative Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) featuring the most up-to-date software version that was previously only accessible to customers of Mercedes-Benz passenger automobiles. Numerous features and services make daily existence with an electric vehicle a lot easier for customers.
Navigation using “Electric Intelligence” ensures the greatest possible planning certainty: for example, it shows the current range in real time dependent on the current traffic situation as well as the terrain of the road. It calculates also the most efficient charging strategy to get to the destination as fast as possible, or to reach the desired state of charge (SoC) at the destination. Authentication at the charging station is simple via MBUX and payment is made via Mercedes me. Other highlights include increased performance, extensive personalization options and optimizations of the “Hey Mercedes” voice control assistant.
Mercedes-Benz Vans’ strategy for electrification
Mercedes-Benz Vans has firmly anchored its ambition to lead the way in electric mobility within its strategy. With the Vito E-CELL, Mercedes-Benz Vans was already an early adopter in the field of locally emission-free vans in 2010. Today, Mercedes-Benz has electrified all segments, from the small van to the mid-sized van and the large van.
Beginning in the middle of the decade Mercedes-Benz Vans will be implementing the next phase of its electrification strategy using VAN.EA (MB Vans Electric Architecture): From 2025 every new model will be entirely electric.
